UuDam created huge scale artwork involving hundreds of motorcycles that pump inflatable sculptures, Internet robotic crowdsourcing LICENSE 2 DRAW app/installation that enable people from anywhere in the world to draw on one canvas placed ten thousands of kilometers away from them. He also does global travel sculpture/performances, expanding the definition of studio sculpture practice. UuDam’s videos Serpents’ Tails address the rapid development of Vietnam with a prophetic message. His on-going multi-phased Time Boomerang puts a fresh look on the South East Asia current geopolitics situation and expand on it millions of years into the future and the past. Working creatively with video, performance, photography, sculpture, technology and new media, UuDam’s thought-provoking art practice is unique in the Vietnamese contemporary art scene today.
Born Vietnam in 1971, UuDam briefly attended University of Fine Art in HCMC. He graduated from UCLA in 2001 and got his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2005.
UuDam has been exhibiting at many venues of in world including the Yokohama Museum of Art, Aichi Triennale, the High Line Art in NYC, Queensland Museum of Contemporary Art (Australia), the Asia Pacific Triennale 8th, Bildmuseet Museum in Sweden, OnSite Art Fest in Taipei, Art Stage Singapore 2016, Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art, Kadist SF, the Jewish Museum (New York), RISD Museum, Singapore Biennale 2013, Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, NTU CCA in Singapore, Sunshower (National Art Center in Tokyo), Kuandu Fine Art Museum and the Esplanade Visual Arts. He will be showing in the First Thailand Biennale and Shanghai Biennale this 2018.
His works has been mentioned and reviewed in Art Forum, Flash Art, Brooklyn Rail, several times in Hyperallergic, Vietnam News, Blouin Art Info, The New York Times, Singapore Today Top Pick, Saigoneer, Los Angeles Times, Phnom Penh Post, Vietnam National TV, Art Radar Journal, LA weekly, Time Out New York, Arttribune.com (Italy), Zing.vn, etc.
He won the Jury Selection Prize of the prestigious Japan Media Art Festival 2015.
UuDam is also a cofounder of the collective XEM artist book in Saigon.
